Ulverston... Birthplace of Stan Laurel; Norman Birkett QC and several other people...
A Good traditional Georgian Market town, FULL of interesting things to see; do; eat and drink... (especially drink... what with 2 micro-breweries in the town... but don't say I told you......). Many interesting and good value restaurants/gastro-pubs too. The sea and beautiful coastline is a mile leisurely walk along the shortest; deepest and widest canal in the country... Or go uphill for a spectacular view of Morecambe Bay from the Hoad monument - another leisurely walk... (If walking is your thing we are at the start of the Cumbria Way .... or for shorter options come to our Walking Festival... ). If that wasn't enough the Lake District National Park is just on our doorstep - 20 mins drive to Coniston Water or Windermere...
~ But before you join those crowds take a look around at all that Ulverston and environs have to offer... visit many individual shops and cafe's... A short walk to Swarthmoor Hall - the 17thC home of George Fox, Founder of the Quaker Movement; the worlds only Laurel and Hardy Museum; the Coronation Hall - excellent entertainment venue; the art deco Roxy cinema for current films and film club; South Lakes Wild Animal Park... for... you'd never guess.... then there's Piel Castle and Furness Abbey; Holker Hall and the Buddhist Manjushri Centre; Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway; Lakeland Motor Museum... Golf courses; Fishing; Tennis and Croquet... so much to do.... so much to explore...
~ Or you may prefer just to sit in an old atmospheric pub with a blazing fire, enjoying the local real ale... listening to live music maybe... and as you wait for your dinner... passing the time with local folk - who are glad to be here too....
